Gerard Martin Beattie

BA (Hons) Graphic Design MA Media Production

I have always has a great love for drawing and painting. I attended Exeter College of Art and Design intending to pursue a career in illustration. During my course I became most interested in the visual image in photography which became and remains my artistic passion.

My interest in the use of the image in different media and contexts was influenced by the advent of the web and multimedia. This is the area in which I have become most involved in and during my MA course I explored those aspects in greater detail.

I have taught photography since 1984. I encourage my students to enjoy the practice of just looking and making good visual decisions, to explore art in the widest sense and to take inventive risks.  Many people saw the advent of the digital image as the death of photography but the photograph as a unique, stand alone image is as powerful, beautiful and influential as ever.

‘We are most of us too busy, too worried, too intent on proving ourselves right, too obsessed with ideas, to stand and stare’ - Bill Brandt

Let us all stand and stare.
