Cathedral faces

Visiting a cathedral I noticed the sculptured faces high in the vaulted ceiling. Different expressions, different genders, humans and other creatures. I became interested in the way these ‘portraits’ were given different characteristics, like actors in a play facing each other across the space.  Most visitors will look up at the ceiling to view the decoration but will they see the faces of these stone players?  The lonely queen, the stern king, the sad knight.
